POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

RESEARCHER II
PAUL SIMON PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY CARBONDALE

This position reports to the Director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. In addition to reporting to the Director, the Researcher II will work closely with the Institute's Associate Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Research select public policy training programs as directed by the Institute staff, including ethics, rural health care and civic engagement among young people and helps plan programming based on research findings;
  2. Make recommendations for change in policies, laws or administrative rules at the local, regional, state or national levels.
  3.  Assist in writing and editing materials to be used during events/symposia and publications reporting the proceedings and recommendations of the events/symposia.
  4. Provide administrative and research assistance to the Director and Associate Director.
  5. Maintain an overall awareness of activities of import or impact to the Director and expedites necessary actions.
  6. Serves as liaison for the Director, providing necessary research information from internal and external units.
  7. Serve as informational source to answer inquiries and resolve problems which require the research of interpretation, explanation and justification of administrative and programmatic policies and procedures.
  8. Compile, collate and synthesize data for correspondence and reports.
  9. Supervise student worker office staff and assist with supervision of student ambassadors.
  10. Assist with research and coordination of institute symposia, conferences and special events upon request of the Director or project coordinators.
  11. Maintain research equipment and instruct others in use of research equipment.

Organizational Relationship:  This position reports to the Director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. In addition to reporting to the Director, the Researcher II will work closely with the Institute's Associate Director.

Minimum Qualifications:  Master's degree in public administration, higher education communications, business or closely related field and two years of professional work experience in public policy research, analysis and application to real world initiatives. Must demonstrate good management skills, strong oral and written communication skills, an ability to work in teams as well as with individuals and a solid understanding of public policy issues at the state and national levels.
