Position: Laboratory Operations Coordinator (full-time), Fermentation Science Institute, SIU Carbondale.

Effective Date: As soon as possible

Responsibilities: The position coordinates, manages, and operates the U.S. Tax and Trade Bureau certified Service Laboratory and teaching laboratories of the Fermentation Science Institute, including supervision of student and teaching assistants. This function includes significant interaction with the public and regional fermentation related businesses. Responsibilities include the maintenance and operation of complex and sensitive analytical instrumentation, such as HPLC, GC, GCMS and spectroscopy. Responsibilities include receiving and processing samples for analysis, interpretation and reporting of analysis results, as well as interfacing with customers. The position also handles various budgeting and accounting functions for the Fermentation Science Institute.

Qualifications: Requires at least a bachelor's degree in an analytical or fermentation related science field and at least one year of experience maintaining and operating analytical instrumentation for the analysis of alcoholic beverages. Applicants must either be recognized currently as a certified chemist by the Federal Tax and Trade Bureau or hold the required qualifications to become certified. Knowledge and experience developing protocols and methodology for standard methods of analysis for alcoholic beverages and experience characterizing and propagating microbiological cultures are preferred. Demonstrable knowledge and experience in alcoholic beverage production and other fermentation related industries is also preferred.
