The Office of Technology Transfer at Southern Illinois University System is seeking qualified applicants for a Technology Transfer Specialist position on the Carbondale Campus beginning in February or March of 2019. This is a continuing, Administrative/Professional position.

Authority and Responsibility: The Director of Technology Transfer will educate and train the employee with regard to the relationship of the technologies to the business practicalities and legal implications. The Director will supervise the tasks performed by the employee. The Technology Transfer Specialist will not have signature authority and should consult the Director of Technology Transfer, and as appropriate, the Associate Dean for Research, the Vice Chancellor of Research, the Associate Provost of Research and/or the Office of the General Counsel, on matters concerning contract approval. The Technology Transfer Specialist will have authority to make limited representations as it relates to institutional positions during negotiations of licenses, patent prosecution dispositions and others as previously approved by the Director of Technology Transfer.

Required Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in a Physical Science, Computer Science or Engineering related area, is required; an advanced degree is preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to varied audiences will be required. A qualified candidate must be competent to explain new technologies and discoveries to prospective licensees and understand how those technologies meet the business objectives of 3rd party industry partners.

Desirable qualifications: A second degree or advanced degree or considerable work experience that reflects expertise in the computer science or electrical engineering field is strongly desirable. Business development experience is a preference. Some knowledge about the patent process is desirable, although not required.

Responsibilities:

Technology Analysis and Securement: 40%

Internal and External Outreach: 30%

Technology Administration: 20%

Miscellaneous: 10%

Travel to professional development conferences, various inter-campus visits and other travel will be expected but the travel should not exceed 10% of time/effort.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands: The physical demands of this work are generally limited to working on a computer and going to various meetings. Thus, light walking and working on a computer will entail most of the physical demands. On the rare occasion, some minor lifting is required to transport display signs for exhibits and boxes for storage. Some driving will be required between campuses and other sites.
