Assistant Professor (Advertising)

Position: Assistant Professor (tenure track), Advertising, School of Journalism, Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The School is fully accredited by the ACEJMC and is a division of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. It is home to the New Media Study Group, a faculty/grad student collaborative research group focused on effects and behavior in digital media settings. The College of Mass Communication and Media Arts offers undergraduate programs in the Department of Cinema and Photography, the School of Journalism, the Department of Radio,Television, and Digital Media, as well as graduate programs through doctorate. The College also houses WSIU Public Broadcasting, which operates PBS and NPR member stations. Qualifications: Minimum requirements include a doctoral degree in advertising, market communications, or related field. Applicants who have completed all but the dissertation and who expect to complete all requirements for the doctorate prior to August 15, 2019 will be considered. If official evidence of completion of all requirements for the doctorate is not received by August 15, 2019, the position offered may be a nine-month, term, non-tenure track appointment at a lower salary rate, in accordance with University policy (https://policies.siu.edu/personnel-policies/chapter2/ch2-faps/conting.php). Applicants must also have: a clearly defined scholarly research plan; working knowledge of creative and digital media usage; ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate level; ability to work across communication disciplines.

Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants who:

  1. have a record of research or creative activities
  2. have a record of excellence in teaching in class and/or online
  3. have advertising industry experience
  4. can contribute to a climate that values and uses diversity in all its forms to enliven and make more inclusive the mission of the School.
  5. Candidates with expertise in media planning, consumer behavior research, and media analytics preferred.

Duties: Teach advertising classes in such areas as Media Planning, Digital Advertising, Consumer/Market Research Strategies, Account Planning, for both undergraduate and graduate students. Conduct research that enhances the School's scholarship and contributes to the field. Other responsibilities include advising graduate students (Masters and Doctoral), providing service appropriate to the academic rank.
