Position: Chair, Department of Cinema & Photography

The Department: The Department of Cinema and Photography offers courses in the history, theory, criticism, and production of cinema, photography, and media arts.  Our educational orientation embodies a holistic understanding of media based in the fine arts and humanities. We are committed to graduating crucial, original, and socially responsible artists and scholars who, as global citizens, can imagine and produce alternatives in media theory and practice. The Department has 12 full-time faculty with approximately 230 undergraduate majors and participates in the Masters, MFA, and Doctoral programs housed at the College level. Qualifications: Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or M.F.A. in cinema, photography, media studies, media arts or related field and must be a tenured Professor or Associate Professor in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. Record of effective teaching and significant research/creative activity are required, and relevant academic administrative experience preferred.

Duties: The Chair is responsible for the development and coordination of the teaching, research, and service programs of the Department. The Chair reports to the Dean and is a member of the Management Council of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. These duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Intellectual and creative leadership of the Department;
  2. Active engagement in teaching and research/creative activity;
  3. Recruitment, development, and evaluation of faculty and staff;
  4. Mentoring and guiding faculty through the tenure and promotion process;
  5. Commitment to building respect for diversity and a climate of collaboration in all aspects of the Department;
  6. Academic program development;
  7. Representing the Department’s programs and faculty to various constituencies;
  8. Supporting and enhancing the Department’s grant activities;
  9. Maintain and continue to improve Alumni relations;
  10. Fiscal management and administration.
  11. Collaborating with the MCMA integrated graduate programs.

Effective Date of Employment: November 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 with possible renewal.
