Instructor/Assistant Instructor (Prevention Initiative Assistant Teacher)

Position: One Instructor or Assistant Instructor (Prevention Initiative Assistant Teacher) position in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education and Human Services, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Responsibilities include serving as a Prevention Initiative Assistant Teacher in the Southern Region Early Childhood Programs at the Child Development Lab working with at-risk birth to three year old children and their families. Position contingent on available funding.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Baccalaureate Degree in Early Childhood Education; Child Development; Child and Family Services; Special Education; Social Work; Elementary Education with Infant/Toddler experience is required for the rank of Assistant Instructor. Master’s degree in one of the areas listed above is required for appointment at rank of Instructor.
  2. Applications must hold a philosophical orientation consistent with developmentally appropriate educational practices as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Experience and leadership in establishing partnerships within schools and communities in support of families with young children is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. The Professional Educator License with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Special Education are preferred.
  2. The Bilingual endorsement as well as Advanced degrees in the above stated areas are preferred.
  3. Recent experience working with infants and toddlers and their families.
  4. Knowledge of Parents as Teachers, Illinois Early Learning Guidelines, Creative Curriculum, and Early Childhood data collection.
  5. Contributions to professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels are preferred.
  6. Knowledge of DCFS licensing regulations and awareness of working with early childhood interns and practicum students is strongly preferred.

Duties of the Position:

  1. Serve as a model of early childhood professionalism through interactions with the children, parents, and staff members, teaching practices, planning, and involvement in professional activities.
  2. In partnership with the Lead Teacher,
    1. Plan a developmentally appropriate program for birth to three children and their families based on NAEYC, Parents and Teachers, and Illinois Early Learning Guidelines that includes intensive home visits and center based activities in partnership with parents, schools, and community groups, including hospitals and other health organizations.
    2. Screen, recruit, and enroll parents in the last trimester of pregnancy and parents with children birth to three.
    3. Assess, develop, and implement an Individual Family Services plan with each family.
    4. Complete and submit documentation as required by the Illinois State Board of Education and Parents as Teachers.
    5. Serve as a liaison between Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the Child Development Lab, the partner school districts, and the Southern Region Early Childhood Programs.
  3. Demonstrate participation in professional activities.
  4. Participate in appropriate training and/or university coursework as needs are identified and required.
  5. Participate in the annual performance review.
  6. Perform other responsibilities as needed.

Appointment: This is a term, non-tenure-track appointment. Reappointment is contingent on performance, programmatic need, and availability of funding.
