Position: Part-time, term, non-tenure track faculty positions in the Department of Workforce Education and Development with specialization in organizational training and development.

The Department of Workforce Education and Development has delivered an on-site Baccalaureate Degree program with a major in Workforce Education and Development since 1973. The program is currently offered on 10 military bases and two non-military sites in eight states as follows: NBK Bangor, WA; JB Charleston AFB, SC; NAS Oceana, VA; Great Lakes NTC, IL; Jacksonville NAS, FL; JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, NJ; Mayport NS, FL; NAS Pensacola, FL; Naval Base San Diego, CA; Scott AFB, IL; and Mt. San Jacinto College, Mt San Jacinto, CA and John A. Logan College, IL. The WED Graduate Program is offered on the Carbondale, IL campus and online. On all matters pertaining to the operation of the program, Assistant Lecturers/Assistant Professors of Practice are accountable to the Department of Workforce Education and Development and to the College of Education and Human Services.

Responsibilities of the Position: Faculty teaching in the Baccalaureate Degree program are responsible for teaching regular courses as assigned by the Department Chairperson. These courses are WED 460-Occupational Analysis and Curriculum Development, WED 462-Instructional Methods and Materials, WED 463-Assessment of Learner Performance, WED 466-Foundations of Workforce Education; WED 469-Training Systems Management and WED 486-Adult Learning. The following graduate courses are offered at the Carbondale Campus and online: WED 560-Introduction to Workforce Development Research; WED 566-Administration and Supervision; and WED 586-Developing Programs for Adult Learners. THE INTENT OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS TO IDENTIFY A POOL OF ADJUNCT FACULTY WHO LIVE IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ONE OF THE DELIVERY SITES LISTED ABOVE AND ARE QUALIFIED TO DELIVER WED COURSES AS LISTED.


  1. Master's degree required (doctorate preferred), from a regionally accredited institution, in one of the following areas: workforce education, training and development, adult education, human resources, or a related field. The rank of assistant lecturer requires a master's degree. The rank of assistant professor of practice requires a doctorate degree.
  2. A minimum of three years of documented experience teaching at the postsecondary level, such as a 2-year and 4-year college, the military, or in business and industry.
  3. Experience in applying workforce education, adult learning and human resource development principles in business and industry.
  4. Graduate-level course work in one or more of the following areas: human resource development, workforce diversity, leadership development, workforce education research, needs assessment, occupational analysis, adult learning theory, instructional methodology, curriculum development, training evaluation, training systems management, and foundations of workforce education.
  5. Various course offerings throughout the year require a pool of applicants with a wide range of qualifications (see items above 1-4). Preference will be given to applicants with a background in the specific course content of the available assignment.
  6. Applicants may be subject to background check via RAPIDGate for military site access.

Appointment: These are term, non-tenure-accruing positions. After initial screening of applications, if selected and approved as a finalist, candidates will be expected to interview with an off-campus faculty member at the nearest location where the program is offered. The maximum allowed travel reimbursement is $500 per course.

Application Deadline: December 11, 2018 or until filled. Teaching needs are ongoing and applications will be accepted through November 2019.

Effective Date of Employment: Varies depending upon site location and course offering for each semester.
