(Prevention Initiative Family Educator)

Position: One or more Assistant Instructor or Assistant Lecturer (Prevention Initiative Family Educator) positions in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education and Human Services, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Responsibilities include serving as a Prevention Initiative Family Educator in the Southern Region Early Childhood Programs working with at-risk birth to three year old children and their families. Position(s) contingent on available funding.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Baccalaureate Degree in Early Childhood Education; Child Development; Child and Family Services; Special Education; Social Work; Psychology, or a related field of study is required for the rank of Assistant Instructor. Master's degree in one of the areas listed above is required for rank of Assistant Lecturer.
  2. Recent experience working with infants and toddlers and their families.
  3. Applicants must hold a philosophical orientation consistent with developmentally appropriate educational practices as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
  4. Experience and leadership in establishing partnerships within schools and communities in support of families with young children.

This is a security-sensitive position. Before any offer of employment is made, the University will conduct pre-employment background investigation, which includes a criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Early Childhood endorsement and/or Early Childhood Special Education endorsement as as a Bilingual endorsement.
  2. Gateway Infant/Toddler credential.
  3. The ability to speak and write Spanish.
  4. Knowledge of Parents as Teachers, Illinois Early Learning Guidelines, Creative Curriculum, and Early Childhood data collection.
  5. Contributions to professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels are preferred.
  6. Knowledge of DCFS licensing regulations.

Duties of the Position:

  1. Serve as a model of early childhood professionalism through interactions with the children, parents, and staff members, teaching practices, planning and involvement in professional activities.
  2. Plan a developmentally appropriate program for birth to three and their families based on NAEYC, Parents as Teachers, and Illinois Early Learning Guidelines that includes intensive home visits and center based activities in partnership with parents, schools, and community groups, including hospitals and other health organizations.
  3. Screen, recruit, and enroll parents in the last trimester of pregnancy and parents with children birth to three.
  4. Assess, develop, and implement an Individual Family Services Plan with each family.
  5. Complete and submit documentation as required by the Illinois State Board of Education and Parents as Teachers.
  6. Demonstrate participation in professional activities.
  7. Serve as a liaison between the school districts and the Southern Region Early Childhood Programs.
  8. Participate in the annual performance review.
  9. Perform other responsibilities as needed.

Appointment: This is a term, non-tenure-track appointment. Reappointment is contingent on performance, programmatic need and availability of funding.
