Position Summary: Institutional Research & Studies is seeking qualified applicants for a data analyst position within the office. This is a term administrative/professional appointment.

Duties and Responsibilities: The researcher will retrieve data from SIU Carbondale and external information systems using a computer programming language such as SAS to gather data for analytic studies. The incumbent will analyze patterns and trends in large volumes of data using spreadsheet analysis, critical thinking skills and graphical display. Researcher will reduce large data into useful, concise information for campus constituents and leaders. The researcher will assist with surveys on students and staff requested by external agencies such as the Illinois Board of Higher Education and Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System by coordinating with other offices to gather all requested data to comply with state and federal reporting requirements to avoid monetary penalty for non-reporting. Researcher will interact with state and federal agencies to find out what is needed when these agencies request data, finding out where to obtain the data and submit agency forms in a timely manner to comply with law and maintain the university’s status.

Also, the researcher will gather information to answer questions by senior level administrators about SIU Carbondale using programming, survey research, interviews, and searching the web to provide information to help leaders make informed decisions about problems or issues at SIU Carbondale, analyze data, employ statistics, develop and describe graphs and charts to write research reports to disseminate research findings about the institution.

The researcher will communicate with data requester to refine their information request to provide data in an efficient manner, with results that meet the needs of the customer. In addition, the researcher will write computer programs, processes and scripts to extract information from SIU Carbondale's information systems; reconciles data from one report with other data sources at SIU Carbondale. Many offices produce information about the same subject matter and numbers often conflict. Incumbent must be able to explore the inconsistency and resolve data conflicts.

The researcher finds ways to operationalize difficult variables such as faculty "productivity", student "success" and other qualitative indicators necessary to help SIU Carbondale decision makers solve problems at the university.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business, Math/Statistics, or a related field, or a bachelor’s degree that included coursework in statistics and/or research methodology. Applicant must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work independently. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications: Higher Education experience preferred. Experience in data analysis and reporting including experience with tools such as SAS, SPSS, SQL, PHP, Cognos, Argos, or a similar type tool is preferred.
