Position: Assistant Lecturer/Assistant Professor of Practice (Public Relations). Term, non-tenure track.

About the Department: The Department of Communication Studies (https://cola.siu.edu/communicationstudies/) is a department within the College of Liberal Arts. It offers B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Areas of study at the undergraduate level include intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, performance studies, persuasive communication, and public relations. The graduate program emphasizes the interplay of communication and culture through four curricular areas: gender, sexuality, and relational communication; intercultural communication and pedagogy; performance studies; and rhetoric and society. Department-sponsored co-curricular activities include The Marion Kleinau Theatre, Public Relations Student Society of America, the Communication Career Council, and an active debate program. Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a Carnegie Doctoral University: Higher Research Activity institution, located 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri.

Non-tenure track faculty at SIU Carbondale have their own graduated promotion structure, and are covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement made between the Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois University and the SIUC Non-Tenure Track Faculty Association, IEA/NEA. Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in communication or closely related field for appointment at the rank of Assistant Lecturer. Expertise in public relations as indicated by graduate coursework, relevant college or university teaching experience, and relevant professional experience. Must show evidence of, or potential for, excellence in undergraduate teaching and recruitment (as related to undergraduate teaching).

Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of professional public relations industry experience. Some experience, as indicated by teaching and/or graduate coursework, in intercultural communication and/or online courses preferred. Experience with undergraduate professional development and/or recruitment preferred. Individuals who hold a doctorate are preferred, and will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice.

Duties: Teach courses in public relations, and others as assigned. Contribute to curricular development in public relations. Serve as faculty advisor to the Raymond D. Wiley Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. Assist undergraduate director in recruitment and retention of undergraduate students, as related to undergraduate teaching.
