Position Summary: This is a term, non-tenure-track faculty appointment as Lead Teacher. Reporting to the Center Director, the Lead Teacher maintains a program of developmentally appropriate classroom instruction and provides a safe and nurturing environment in accordance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards, Program Policies and Procedures, and Department of Children and Family Services Licensing Standards. Major duties include developing and implementing daily study guides, conducting developmental screenings and assessments, and conducting parent teacher conferences and home visits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Classroom Management:
    1. Engage in physical management and care of pre-school children including, but not limited to: leveling, lifting/holding a child, running after or restraint of a child. This includes ability to adapting to child size/classroom environment, i.e., sitting on floor during activities.
    2. Participate in mealtime activities that include eating and role modeling, table social skills, and age appropriate conversation.
    3. Maintain a safe, organized classroom environment and a current inventory log.
    4. Provide active supervision of children at all times (scanning, counting, zoning, setting up environment, anticipating behaviors, and listening).
  2. Instruction:
    1. Implement educational activities that ensure appropriate educational outcomes.
    2. Prepare and maintain a daily schedule appropriate to the developmental needs of young children in the Head Start classroom.
    3. Prepare, implement and post weekly study guides in accordance with Creative Curriculum studies and curriculum fidelity guidelines.
    4. Actively participate in reflective learning with supervisor, coordinators and consultants.
  3. Paperwork and Documentation:
    1. Submit completed, accurate, and timely screenings and assessments to the Center Director.
      • Screening to be completed in accordance with screening requests
      • Assessments to be completed in accordance with assessment timeline.
    2. Complete and submit timely, accurate information such as weekly/monthly attendance, weekly study guides, in-kind records, time sheets, absence request forms (sick/personal), and travel vouchers to Center Director.
    3. Responsible to generate, record, and submit in-kind forms.
  4. Monitoring:
    1. Ensure accurate developmental screenings are performed within 45 days of enrollment.
    2. Ensure ongoing child observations and assessments are completed and submitted by the required due dates.
    3. Review files of children assigned to classroom upon enrollment for limitations or restrictions, such as medical, religious, physical and inform classroom teacher.
    4. Complete checkpoints and submit by due dates.
    5. Complete Health and Safety Checklist of classroom and playground.
    6. Review any applicable IEPs for children with a documented disability. Adhere to accommodations written in the IEP Complete monthly IEP goal activities
    7. Ensure parent teacher conferences and home visits are accurately completed for each child enrolled in the classroom and submitted in a timely manner.
  5. Oversight:
    1. Contribute to supervision and evaluation of university/high school students (if applicable).
    2. Contribute to the supervision and training of parent volunteers while in the classroom.
  6. Communication:
    1. Share information regarding screening and assessment results with teacher and parents.
      • Discuss results with Child Development Coach and use results to plan for future activities/individualization
    2. Contact the DCFS Hotline in cases of suspected child abuse/neglect and complete report to Center Director.
    3. Schedule and complete home visits and parent-teacher conferences per requirements, discussing child outcomes, school readiness, and working to strengthen the home to school connection.
  7. Professional Development:
    1. Attend and participate in staff and agency meetings.
    2. Participate in 20 hours (5 of which must be Gateways Registry approved) of professional development each year per the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services Day Care Licensing Regulations and the Head Start Act.
    3. Obtain and Maintain a Gateways Illinois ECE Credential level 4 or above.
    4. Obtain and maintain Interrator Reliability Certification through Teaching Strategies GOLD.
    5. Obtain and maintain ServeSafe Food Handler Certification.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  1. Maintain confidentiality of all records in accordance with agency policy.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or agency director.
  3. Participate in extra activities as needed, i.e., annual parent activity, annual parent orientation, family fun fares, literacy events.
  4. Assist in recruitment of Head Start children who are eligible for enrollment.
  5. Assist in the involvement of parents in the total program.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field with documented completion of 21 hours of approved ECE related coursework. One year of experience in teaching preschool children. Ability to maintain a program of developmentally appropriate instruction & physical management & care for children 3-5. Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Instructor with a Bachelors degree, and at the rank of Instructor with a Masters degree.
